With the recent Covid lockdowns, you may be missing your retreat to the gym for a really good workout. Physical fitness and overall wellness is one of the priorities of many active individuals. Many of us know that aside from spending enough time with our families and focusing on our work, we think about the different ways that we can do to be healthy and to stay healthy. And with the recent popularity of baking bread during the pandemic, you may be looking in the mirror and thinking that a workout is exactly what the doctor ordered.

What if I told you, you don’t have to go to a gym to stay in shape? It may be a long time before commercial gyms are reopened, so why not stay in shape at home? Build a gym...in your garage!

Planning for your home gym in Los Angeles

If you’ve ever tried to complete a workout routine at home with all those other people in your house and kids running around, you know the struggle is real. You could go outside, but can you really put a Peloton outside? It’s time to organize your garage so you can convert it to be your own personal Gold’s Gym.

The biggest challenge you will probably have in converting your garage into a home gym is organizing the stuff that you have stored in your garage. It’s time to clean it out! Toss all that unnecessary stuff you’ve been holding on to for too long. Haven’t opened a box in a year? You probably don’t need what’s inside, so go ahead and donate it or just throw it out. Get some shelving and storage containers to keep those items you truly do use organized in one spot. You can install permanent shelving or purchase industrial grade metal shelving to keep your belongings in check.

Next, figure out where you want to work out in your garage. Near the door? Which wall will house exercise equipment? What types of exercise equipment do you want to have? Stationary bike? Weight bench? Pull up bar? Do you want to include a TV on the wall for some online workouts?

Putting a floor on your converted garage gym

Now that you’ve cleared your garage of clutter and considered what types of exercise equipment to include, it’s time to think about that flooring. Concrete is really hard on your feet and legs. You’re going to want to cover that concrete floor with a durable flooring that will support your muscles and joints when working out. Choose rubber foams, carpet and epoxy garage floor sealant that is known for its water and dust resistant properties. You will be more motivated to do push-ups and sit-ups if you have a plush floor.

You can usually find padded flooring on Amazon or other online retail outlets.

Adding insulation to your remodeled garage in Los Angeles

If you live anywhere near the San Gabriel or San Fernando Valleys, you know…the summer gets HOT and the winters are COLD. Looking to avoid the huge variance in temperature? Consider insulating your garage gym. The walls of your garage may already be insulated but you have to add insulation to your garage door. You can replace it with an insulated garage door or you can also install foam, fiberglass or cardboard to cover steel or wooden garage doors. With proper insulation, you can reduce health risks of extreme temperature affecting your performance.

Adding insulation to a garage is about $5,000. You may think this is a steep price to pay, but you’ll be wishing you installed insulation in your garage gym when the mercury tops 100 degrees.

Adding equipment to your renovated garage gym in Los Angeles

Now, that you've furnished the floor and controlled the temperature, it is time to get that  exercise equipment. You have to decide what you want to use if you want to get serious with your training. You can start with the basics such as speed rope, kettlebells, plyo box and medicine ball. These are just a few of the equipment that don't take up much space. You can also purchase a squat stand with a barbell and plates where you can perform back squats, front squats and push presses. You can also add a power rack to develop your strength in weightlifting.

You may want some entertainment to keep you distracted while you work out. You may want to consider putting in speakers to hook up to your phone so you can listen to music while you work out. Or, you may want to install a smart TV on the wall of your garage. That way, you can access online workouts and do them in the privacy of your garage. It’s almost like being at the gym!

Prioritizing your health will never be difficult if you have creatively turned your garage into a fitness area. You can achieve that perfect body that you want, physical wellness from the comfort of your own home.
